Shalom Ministries is a not for profit organization committed to meeting
the basic needs of homeless and low-income persons in our community.
Shalom seeks to build community through the practice of extending
hospitality and dignity to those who hunger and thirst in body, mind,
and spirit. Our goal is to break the cycle of homelessness by creating
a sense of belonging to something - the Shalom community.

Description:
Shalom's program consists of three integrated parts aimed at ending
the cycle of poverty and homelessness by meeting basic needs, building
community, and increasing access to services. These are our meal
program, support services and job training. Our meal program provides a
continental breakfast and nutritious lunch four days a week and an
evening meal each Monday and the last Thursday of each month. Shalom
provides support services during meals that includes case management,
information and referral, crisis intervention and prevention, basic
health screening and education, to help stabilize the individuals we
serve. Shalom also provides a clothes closet, job training, work study
program, computer training and a computer lab.
The Shalom community works within the continuum of guest,
volunteer, employee, and community leader. The goal of our volunteer
program is to breakdown stereotypes and barriers between those who have
homes and those who are homeless, those who are mentally and physically
disabled and those who aren't, those who are able to cope with life's
trials and those who struggle to cope, those who live in poverty and
those who have a living wage. Our program integrates persons of all
cultural, religious, and socio-economic groups in an atmosphere of
mutual admiration and respect. The Shalom community provides ways of
giving and receiving through a process of interdependence.
History:
Shalom Ministries was founded in 1994 to provide meals to downtown
low-income and homeless folks. What began as a small church based meal
program has grown to a comprehensive, collaborative program, utilizing
over 465 volunteers and serving over 2,500 meals a month.
